Quick vs Fast

In most of sports, it is very important to be fast.  As well as basketball, it is very important to be fast especially when turn over happens.  But for 1 on 1 being quick is more important than fast!

What is the difference between fast and quick?  In grammar, fast refers speed, and quick refers time.  In basketball fast refers players’ running speed, and quick refers players’ one action.

For example, Lebron James is one of the fastest players, but he is not the quickest player because he runs very fast as you see his chase down blocks, but you rarely see him crossover and leave defender behind.  Kyrie Irving is not the fastest player in the league, but he is one of the quickest players in the league.  He doesn’t score from fast break a lot, but he crossover and leave defender behind.

One of the most important components is first step or stride.  Those who leave defender behind are usually quick with their first step.  For example, Jamal Crawford was never thought of fastest player, but he leaves defenders behind so easily.  One reason is because of his handle, and another reason is quickness of his one step.

Another example is Allen Iverson, he broke so many ankles and puts defenders on the floor.  Defenders trip because in 3 steps, Iverson reaches top speed.  You can see it in the video below.

The quickness will help you crossover your opponents.  Here is the drill you can use to practice your change of pace and difection.  Please listen to what the trainer says about the stride.  This will help you go higher level!
